Donald Trump and Joe Bidenare in a dead heat for 2024, a new poll has shown - with ABC News anchorGeorge Stephanopoulos branding it 'shocking'.
Both the president and his predecessor were backed by 46 percent of respondents to a Wall Street Journal poll, published on Sunday.
Voters were asked which of the two they would chose, in a hypothetical re-run of the 2020 election. The same poll gave Trump a resounding lead over GOP challengers.
Trump was the first choice of 59 percent of respondents, with Ron DeSantis a distant second at 13 percent.
Nikki Haley, who was widely judged to have performed well in the first primary debate on August 23, was narrowly behind DeSantis, with 8 percent of the vote.
Vivek Ramaswamy, a political newcomer who exploded onto the scene on August 23 and catapulted himself to the forefront of discussion, was fourth with 5 percent.
Stephanopoulos, host of ABC's This Week, said it was remarkable that the 91 criminal charges filed against Trump failed to dent his political chances.
