Special Council Promises Speedy Trial in Trump Document Investigation
Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith said his office will seek a speedy trial in the investigation into Donald Trumps handling of classified materials after he left office, remarks that came shortly after an indictment against the former president was unsealed on Friday in the first look at a months-long investigation.
Our laws that protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the United States and they must be enforced. Violation of those laws put our country at risk, Smith said at a brief news conference Friday afternoon. We have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone.
