Lawmakers, 2024 GOP Rivals React to Trump Indictment News
Lawmakers spared little time before weighing in on former President Donald Trumps announcement that he had been indicted late Thursday without seeing the charges as some erupted in a chorus of support while others voiced notes of condemnation.
The usual cadre assumed their positions at Trumps side, including some top Republicans, like House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who condemned the Biden administration for weaponizing the Justice Department and federal law enforcement, calling it a dark day for the United States of America.
It is unconscionable for a President to indict the leading candidate opposing him. Joe Biden kept classified documents for decades, McCarthy wrote in a tweet. I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice. House Republicans will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise likewise came to Trumps aid late Thursday, calling it a sham indictment and the continuation of the endless political persecution of Donald Trump.
