Spain sack Jorge Vilda and issue grovelling apology for Luis Rubiales scandal
Spain coach Jorge Vilda has been sacked and the countrys football association has issued a grovelling apology for Luis Rubiales behaviour at the Womens World Cup.
Vildas sacking in the latest development in the saga that has erupted following Rubiales kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spains World Cup final win over England on August 20.
In a lengthy statement issued more than two weeks after Rubiales kissed Hermoso during the trophy ceremony in Sydney and the federations president refused to resign, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) now says the incident has tarnished Spanish society and vowed to try to repair the damage, but blamed the wording of their previous statements on the matter on Rubiales alone.
Fifa has suspended Rubiales, whom the Spanish Prosecutors Office have initiated proceedings against for possible sexual assault on Hermoso shortly after their 1-0 win over England, and interim RFEF president Pedro Rocha said in Tuesdays new statement: [The RFEF] considers it is essential to present the most sincere apologies to the football institutions, the players, especially the players of the Spanish national team and the English national team, all stakeholders involved in football and the fans around the world, for the totally unacceptable behaviour of its highest institutional representative during the final of the Womens World Cup and in the moments that followed.
