LIVE: Portugal, Ronaldo Begin World Cup Quest Against Ghana
It's been an eventful World Cup for Cristiano Ronaldo, and that’s before the Portugal star has even set foot on the field.
Days after having his contract with Manchester United terminated, Ronaldo turns his focus to playing in his fifth World Cup, in which he hopes to make some history on both an individual and team level. No men’s player in history has scored in five World Cups, but Ronaldo could become the first if he’s able to put the noise of the last few weeks—much of which has been self-inflicted—behind him and score in Qatar. Portugal hasn’t gotten past the round of 16 since Ronaldo’s first World Cup, in 2006, though, and Ghana won’t make things easy in their group opener.
The Black Stars might be the lowest-ranked team in the World Cup field, but new dual national recruits, such as Iñaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao) and Tariq Lamptey (Brighton), give the African side a new outlook. The two sides have only met once before, in the 2014 World Cup group stage, with Ronaldo’s 80th-minute goal the difference.
