England were confident, at least in the newspapers. Letter-writers to the press back home who had watched the US team training for the London Olympics reckoned they would struggle to beat a third division side, while the Daily Express chortled that it would only be fair to give the USA a three-goal start.

The US players seemed to share the assessment. William Jeffrey, the US manager, told the press that his players were going like lambs to the slaughter, while both Frank Borghi, the teams goalkeeper who worked in a brickyard, and half-back Walter Bahr confessed that they would be delighted if they kept Englands margin of victory down to a couple of goals. They didnt dream we could beat them, American Harry Keough would say later, and neither did we.

When the game kicked off, it appeared as if the scoffing of the Daily Express might have been accurate, after all. England had six shots in the first 12 minutes.

Encouraged, the Englishmen continued to press, dominating possession so completely that Keough felt like we were just standing watching them play. The Americans took until the 25th minute to get a shot at the England goal, but then the Kings of Football struck back. Stan Mortensen twice smacked the woodwork,Borghi tipped over a Tom Finney header that was destined for the top corner, Wilf Mannion scooped over from 12 yards. Afraid that all these missed opportunities might come to count against them, the English ex-pats in the crowd became anxious. Wake up, England! one of them shouted.
