Energy firms accused of ratcheting up small businesses bills to pay 'secret' broker commissions
Millions of small businesses that have used brokers to fix energy contracts could be entitled to thousands of pounds in compensation.
Businesses and other organisations, including local authorities, care homes and charities, have unknowingly been paying over the odds for energy as prices soar and the Government ditches much of its support.
Law firm Harcus Parker launched a 2billion claim against energy firms back in February, over allegations they paid secret commissions to third-party energy brokers and inflated customer bills.
The firm currently has about 3000 claimants, but the no-win, no-fee claim could pay out up to 2million customers, with an average claim of 20,000 per customer.
Harcus Parker lawyers say it's possible claims for long-term contracts for heavy energy users could exceed 1million.
Now the firm claims suppliers are dodging responsibility and using lawyers to block businesses from finding out how much they've been charged in secret broker commissions, This Is Money can reveal.
