Lakers hold interest in re-signing D'Angelo Russell -- is Irving pursuit already over?
The ongoing NBA Finals is no deterrent for the rumor mill. As the Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets fight for the NBA title, other contenders are planning the best way forward for next season in an effort to play in the 2024 Finals.
One of those teams is the Los Angeles Lakers, the beaten Western Conference finalists. The Lakers have a potential problem brewing at point guard and seem hesitant to commit to D'Angelo Russell, who the team recquired from Minnesota in February.
Thin market for point guards
Russell is eligible to sign a two-year extension worth nearly $68 million before he hits free agency next month, but the Lakers are not expected to pay that kind of money for a player who struggled mightily against Denver in the West finals.
